On 17 December 1999 the General Assembly in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendations of the World Conference of Ministers of Youth and proclaimed August 12 as International Youth Day, with the aim of:
- Improving youth participation in the activities of the United Nations as well as in society and in decision-making.
- Developing policies in priority areas such as education, employment, hunger and poverty, health, environment, drug abuse and juvenile delinquency.
- Developing channels of communication and cooperation between youth organizations of the United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental youth organizations.
