Coordination of Action Research on AIDS and Mobility in Asia (CARAM Asia)
CARAM Asia is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The organization was set up in response to the growing global phenomenon of migration and the related vulnerabilities that migrant workers experience in relation to HIV and AIDS and other health risks. The network emphasizes a regional approach in addressing the issues of migration, HIV and migrant health as labour migration involves sending, transit and destination countries. Currently the network is comprised of 39 migrant and migrant support organizations in South & Southeast Asia, the Middle East and East Asia. CARAM Asia pursues research and advocacy in three key thematic areas through its taskforces: 1) Migration, Health and HIV (MHH) 2) Migrant Workers Rights, and 3) Migration, Development and Globalization (MDG). Taskforce members are then responsible for developing and implementing appropriate strategies and programmes in their respective countries. The Migration, Health and HIV (MHH) taskforce focuses on migrant workers’ health rights, including HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and empowerment of migrants living with HIV and their spouses. CARAM members transmit the voice of migrants and build the evidence base to support advocacy efforts through participatory action research (PAR). CARAM has conducted various regional participatory action research studies to assess the accessibility of health information and services, particularly regarding HIV, for migrant workers in Asia. CARAM Asia, relying on the results of its PARs and, when possible, migrant spokespersons, has also represented migrants’ health and HIV issues at the international level: as a member of the Joint UN Initiative on Mobility and AIDS (JUNIMA), as a member of the UNAIDS Task Team on HIV Related Travel Restrictions, in the High Level UN Meetings on the Political Declaration on AIDS, and in International AIDS conferences.
